This page is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of heritage mosaics across Canada. Century old mosaics across Canada have fallen into disrepair and are often covered over with adhesives and carpeting or other new floorings.
The loss to our heritage is a sad reflection not only on our lack of understanding and place of mosaics, but on our disregard for heritage art and architecture. It is true that the cost of restoration can often exceed the cost of covering or replacement and that there is a lack of mosaic restoration skills in Canada, however, with the drive by MAAC to improve awareness of mosaics in Canada and the utilisation of countless heritage funds across Canada, this trend we believe can be reversed.
Restoration Projects There are numerous considerations before tackling a restoration project. The following list (under construction) outlines some key questions and elements to a restoration project: 1. Is the mosaic on private or public property? Under who's authority? 2. Has the property been granted heritage status? 3. In what condition is the mosaic work? 4. What materials is the mosaic constructed from? Stone(type), quarry tile, ceramic tile, encaustic tile? 5. Will you receive heritage monies for restoration. What is your budget? 6. Is there a qualified mosaic restorer in your region?
